Gettin' There

Yes, I'm still here. It's been pretty busy around here, what with the working and trying to get the flat in order and meet new people and looking for a better job. Fortunately, I'm well on the way to doing all three. We somehow managed to get the new lounge suite into the house (I don't know how that worked, honestly. But I have the banged up fingers to prove it wasn't easy!) and all I need is to get a chair and a desk for my room, and I'll be all set to go. We went to a Work New Zealand pub meet and met some people there, and they invited us to some live music and out for drinks and things like that, so we at LEAST know a few people we can invite to Erin's birthday party in a few weeks, which is actually going to be a joint party with Steve, since his birthday is 4 days after Erin. Paaarty at the flat! And today I called a few temp agencies, on the advice of someone I met at the pubmeet oddly enough, and one of them said she had a job for me that starts next week! So I'm going in to interview tomorrow, and hopefully all will go well. The next step is to plan some trips around the south island on the weekends. Any suggestions?

This is great! It's awesome to follow along with what you two kats are up to in the rainy land of sheep. I'm sure you both are having an awesome time.
South Island adventures:
you gotta hit spots all around the whole island because environments can change drastically in a matter of miles. I'm sure you're already figuring that out. Punakaiki, milford sound, mt cook, wanaka, abel tasman, etc. make it happen ladies. from that picture of erin sitting eating a potato, i'm guessing you're in or near christchurch? it looks like christchurch anyhow. from there you've gotta take the train straight across the island west to greymouth. greymouth is absolutly nothing special, perhaps the least special place on the island, but from there you can head north or south to beautiful lands really close by. and the train ride is one of hte best in the world. it's so beautiful. the train is a must do for real. you go through a super long tunnel and come out on the opposite side of the alps. punakaiki is just to the north, and there's a great hostel to stay in in the rainforest wher eyou can walk a private path through the forest to a really gorgeous beach (whereyou cant really swim - the wild tasman may take you for a real spin... all the way to australia or something). and you'll see flightless birds just walking around like chickens or something, it's great. and punakaiki is home of hte pancake rocks , and there are really unique blowhole sort of phenomenons, but they're different from guisers (sp?).
to the south of greymouth are many great places. i'm sure you've already got a list of ideas.best wishes. I look forward to hearing of your adventures.

I like Amber's suggestions, but even in late Sept. last year, the west coast was COLD and RAINY! So I'd start on the north end for now, maybe touring the vineyards and coastal areas up there (which I didn't get to -- yet!)
You've already been to the hot springs, but have you gone skiing anywhere? Get Hanna and/or Guido to take you to Mt. Hutt, from the top of which you can see the South Pacific -- and have big brown mountain parrots eat the rubber around your windshield!
